Day of the Mayflies

tl;dr: Day 1 of Memorial Day weekend means I have a lot of company on the water. Gah, mayflies.

My stay in New Johnsonville was extended, because I'm just that lazy. Yesterday promised a bucking headwind, so I decided to stay in my motel room with its less-than-consistant air conditioning and wait for all of these bug bikes that I'm pretty sure I sustained before checking in to subside. The housekeeper said I could stay as long as I wanted and do whatever I wanted, so long as she did not find three things: "broken furniture, blood, or strange smells."

There is now another "patch" on my kayak. I decided to get serious.

Oh look, another spectacular rock face! Let me get close. Oh no, mayflies! Swarm!

This is the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend. The water is already getting choppy. There are a lot of pontoon boats here.

I discovered something really nice: canned food. It turns out that unlike when biking or hiking, with kayaking weight is less important than volume.

I discovered something not nice: biting ants.

A local informed me that an angry cottonmouth would jump right in my kayak with me. So there's that.

scrape through this!
