2012-07-12 tl;dr: I actually spent most of the day actually really sailing. And getting rained on. It turns out sleeping on the trampoline isn't that comfortable. And it leaves you very exposed to bugs. That mesh the trampoline is constructed from is no obstacle to mosquitoes. Eventually I set up my tent and climbed in. Good thing, too, because a squall rolled through soon after. For the first time since after the day I purchased this sailing kayak I was actually able to spend most of the day actually sailing. Just as well, too, because I spent several hours gliding over water too shallow to use the peddle drive. It wasn't much of a breeze, though. Just enough to push me along slightly faster than peddling. It was also nice being able to pick up snatches of sleep that I missed last night. As long as I opened my eyes every thirty seconds or so I was good. I am now in the Apalachee Bay part of Florida coast where nobody lives. I barely saw a boat for the second half of the day. Again, probably because of the miles of shallow water. There are no beaches here. It's all mud and grass and oyster beds. The water keeps switching between crystal clear and coffee dark. I ended up camping on a little island near Econfina River State Park. There isn't any dry ground on this island. The only sand here is that which I brought with me. The best I could do was to set my tent up on layers of washed-up sea grass. Which means a big enough storm could send waves right into my tent. Hey, look. A big storm is coming. |
