2011-03-19 tl;dr: I'm on the road again, but due to miserable weather I just didn't have it in me to go any distance. It was mostly cold all day. It's colder now, and windy, and it's raining really hard. But I'm dry in my sleeping bag. In a Motel 6. Because even my masochism has limits.I didn't make it too far. It's hard to get excited about bicycling when the weather is so miserable. From The Alisal I took the back way to 101 and then to Highway 1. The first few miles on 1 were up hill. The next 17 were down hill. With a very strong tail wind. I made decent time. Even so I decided to stop in Lompok. The forecast was dismal. And, as I've said before, I can deal with cold, and I can deal with wind, and I can deal with rain, but I can't deal with all three at the same time. I visited Nojoqui Falls. Due to the rains there was actually a waterfall to see. Apparently, it's normally just a trickle. In contrast to how waterfalls normally gouge out the rock they flow through, this waterfall actually builds it up by depositing minerals. I experienced my first flat tire on this trip today. This was caused by spokes coming loose and puncturing the tube. I tightened the spokes, but I suspect I tightened them too much because one broke. I replaced it at a bicycle shop in Lompok. I've noticed that there are four types of bicycle shops: friendly, snobby, clueless and cranky. This one was cranky. Cranky shops tend to be pretty good. Anyway, I hope those little tires can take the stress. |
