2011-03-25 tl;dr: I have again left the coast. Still cold, and I had a flat tire and gear issues, but scenery is nice. I need to be in Bishop CA by Monday. Obviously I could not peddle there just over the weekend. So I'm aiming for Bakersfield. I'll take the long way. From Morro Bay I again headed north on Highway 1. I could have gone inland, but I really wanted to see the sea lions that I was promised could be found around San Simeon State Park. They weren't there. I guess I should have tried to find that one in Morro Bay that was barking all the time. I took a break in Cambria where someone was handing out free pies. That was a good pie. I headed inland on Santa Rosa Creek Road. I highly recommend this route. It was beautiful biking until it turned into beautiful walking, for it got rather steep at its higher elevations. The scenery was awesome and there were barely any vehicles on the road. From Santa Rosa Creek Road I headed east on Highway 46. Soon after I realized my rear tire was losing air. Another spoke hole. I decided to patch the tube rather than replace. That never works. I know it never works and yet I do it anyway. Removing the rear tire from this bike is a chore. Of course the tire immediately went flat again. I used my new tube. I had quite a bit of trouble getting my rear internal gears hooked back up to the shifter after the second tire change. Even when I did get it hooked up the rear gears started slipping occasionally. At first I thought I had the derailleur misaligned, but I eventually I realized it was the internal gearing of my rear hub that was slipping. By the time I got to Paso Robles I was too lazy to continue on and find a campsite. Also, I needed to purchase a new tube before my next leg and decide what to do about my bicycle. So, hands covered in black grease I checked into a motel again. Apparently 20 inch tubes are popular. Walmart was completely out of the 20 inch standard tubes. There were plenty of every thing else. I purchased one of those slime-filled tubes. |
