2011-03-27 tl;dr: I cycled in the morning and then spent the afternoon driving through the mounts to end in Bishop, CA. Sleeping on the ground wasn't so bad.It was a short day for cycling. I only needed to make it to Bakersfield. There, I rented a car and drove straight through to Bishop where I am to spend the next few days at a customer site. I finally figured out that all of the references to Gin that I had been seeing on various signs have nothing to do with liquor. They grow cotton here. I poked my head into a dairy cow shed. There were several of these sheds with cows as far as you could see in each. I am now trying to think of something witty to write, but mostly I'm just glad I don't have to every milk those cows. The route from Bakersfield to Bishop is pretty easy. You take Highway 178 west, then Highway 14 north onto Highway 395, and that takes you all the way to Bishop. At one point I had considered cycling this route. Holy cow! I am glad I didn't decide to (or rather, I'm glad I didn't have the time). Once I hit the mountains I would have hit 14 miles of uphill on one of the narrowest, busiest, curviest roads I've ever had the opportunity to navigate. After that the it would have been fifty miles of up-hill and eventually over a hundred miles of boring, busy highway. The scenery was nice, though. And the weather was really nice; as you'd expect once I stop bicycling. |
