2011-04-12 tl;dr: I will be in San Francisco. But I have no time to bicycle there. So I'm on the train again. Once again I find myself having to cover miles faster than is feasible by peddling.A CalTrain ticket from Gilroy to San Francisco cost $12.50 from a machine next to the tracks. Nobody asked or checked for that ticket. I'm sure I did something wrong, but I boarded one of the bicycle cars. I realized I had also messed up by not clearly labeling my bicycle as destined for San Francisco. The bicycle car is designed so that bicycles can be strapped to the wall and passengers can sit above. There is room for about a dozen bicycles at first. After that people begin stacking them outward from the wall. Passengers are careful not to block in bicycles that will be departing before them. I eventually yelled down that my bike was "going all the way," and it was promptly buried. It was reassuring seeing every cyclist dressed so utilitarian. These were folks who needed to get to work. There wasn't a bicycle weenie on the entire train. Like in Los Angeles the locals enjoy their graffiti. I would have to say that San Francisco graffiti is sub-par when compared to Los Angeles graffiti. But there seem to be more actual murals. I will spend much of the week with another new customer in San Francisco. |
