2015-09-12 tl;dr: I biked up to Strawberry Point. Look, a giant strawberry. Though I was occasionally awoken by raccoons snarling at each other I actually slept pretty good. Until some raccoon (I hope it was a raccoon) wandered too close to where I was laying out on the ground and started growling at me. Well, it was 4 AM, my normal waking time, so I knew I wasn't getting to sleep after that. Thanks growly creature.I was still following the Heritage Trail, and I was on it long before daylight. It's a well maintained trail, though, and my head lamp kept me going in the right direction. As light spilled over the horizon I saw a lot of critters including deer, turkeys and otters. After breakfast in Dyersville, I peddled all the way up to Strawberry Point to look at their giant strawberry. I stopped early again. These soft gravel roads and hills are kicking my butt. I found a small patch of brush far enough from the surrounding farms to render me hidden. I set up my tent, because there were mosquitoes, and it is supposed to get cold. It seems several cows in the adjoining pasture are in heat. And an owl is hooting directly above my tent. |
