2015-10-07 tl;dr: I skipped out on work and biked across the Oglala National Grassland. I was supposed to work, but it was sunny, and it was warm. So I checked out of my hotel early and hit the road.Today brought me across the Oglala National Grassland. This may be the first "national grassland" I've visited that actually has grass. Usually these grasslands are filled up with trees. Also, there are no towns and almost no ranches along this route. I did not bring enough water, but I did get to see plenty of critters. I was on no busy roads today. Even the paved highways only produced a car every fifteen minutes or so. But half the day was spent on dirt roads. As I crossed into South Dakota, the road ran along side a railroad track. I was passed by more trains than cars. This track has a lot of trains. As it was growing dark, I knew I wasn't going to find anything approaching a shelter, but I hoped I wouldn't need it. So I found a spot out in the grass and laid out my sleeping bag. |
