2015-11-13 tl;dr: I visited Grutas de Loltun and the Labna Archeological Zone. I took too many pictures. Many woodcutters in this area carry rifles. I even heard a shot last night. They are very simple guns. I should have stopped a woodcutter and asked him if I could take a picture. I can only assume they use them for hunting, but as I've yet to see a wild critter other than a small rodent thing near the coast, I have no idea what they are hunting for.I'm finally starting to see signs of real agriculture. There are occasional groves of fruit trees. I visited Grutas de Loltun, which is a giant cave system. The tour was conducted completely in Spanish. I noticed there were a number of people in the tour who spoke at least three languages. After the guide gave his initial talk before entering the cave, I asked him if there was anything I really needed to know (don't touch this or that, watch out for holes, etc). It turns out that is a stupid question in Mexico. Anyway, look, pictures. Watch for people in the pictures in order to see the scale of this cave. Every single town or city I've biked through so far has stray dogs. None look all that healthy, although the breeds seems to be mixing and evolving naturally, so you never see any of the god-forsaken breeds (boxers, poodles, dachshunds) we have in the USA; no, these are more coyote-like in shape. Also, these dogs never beg for food. I have no idea how they survive. Occasionally a pack of them will form a pack and chase my bike, but it's obvious they wouldn't dare nip at me. These dogs have a very defined role in society, it seems. Later on I came across the Labna ruins. Look, more pictures. It started raining as soon as I arrived, and it never stopped raining right up until I fell asleep in my tent, later. I found a quarry (I think) alongside the road to set up camp in. The entry was blocked by a large pool of water that I had to wade across, so I am confident nobody will bother me. I am kind of in the middle of nowhere here. This humidity is starting to get to me. I have never completely dried off since getting rained on last night. |
