2015-12-03 tl;dr: I dropped down to Puerto Angel and then biked over to Huatulco, which isn't a real Mexican city. By morning the room of my cheap motel wreaked of wood smoke. This was actually an improvement. I left while it was still dark and sat at a gas station until it was light enough to be seen by all the taxi drivers who were already on the go.I biked mostly downhill to Puerto Angel just because I wanted to see the Pacific Ocean right away. I biked all the way back up to the highway that would take me to Huatulco. The hills! The traffic! The humidity! If this is what biking along the coast will be like I'm glad I'm considering finishing my trip through Mexico. I know I've dealt with this heat before, but it still kicked my butt. Huatulco is a tourist town. I checked into the Hotel Amakal. I went to the store and purchased an entire chicken which I ate. I then passed out. Huatulco isn't a real Mexican city. All the way across Mexico in every market I visited there was a certain toy I saw over and over. I thought it was silly. But when I was asked to bring something home from Mexico I thought that toy represented Mexico in a nutshell. So I started walking around the markets of Huatulco hunting for it. All I could find was mass-produced crap. This was stuff manufactured for tourists. It could have been from China. (Much of it probably was.) I grew disgusted. Any thoughts of staying in this hot, humid parody of Mexico evaporated, and I was glad I was leaving. The toy? A crochet Minion from the Despicable Me movies. Those little buggers are really popular in actual Mexico. |
