2015-10-10 tl;dr: I left Custer State Park and continued north on the Mickelson Trail. It was so warm last night the temperature never dropped below the dew point. A pleasant surprise. That wouldn't last. After navigating the rocky Fisherman Flats Road and starting down the mountain, the temperature dropped dramatically. It is always warmer at the top of a mountain for some reason. My goal was to visit the Needles Highway, but the road was closed due to construction. While I was debating just how closed it might be, three dump trucks passed by. I decided it was pretty closed, and so I biked over the Galena French Creek Divide directly into the city of Custer. There is a bicycle path along this route, but whoever made it obviously had never peddled a bicycle, so I took the highway's shoulder for most of the distance. In Custer I rejoined the Mickelson Trail heading north. I met other cyclists on this trail, but nobody that wasn't local. I kept on biking long past my ability to focus my eyes on the trail, because I figured the higher elevation I attained, the warmer it would be. I ended up setting up camp at 5600 feet near an old mine. I think my theory needs refining, as it is already cold. |
