2015-11-17 tl;dr: Challenges with food. Stopped in Ciudad del Carmen. Sleeping next to the ocean is horrible. When will I learn that I hate the sound of crashing waves all night long. Also, I thought this highway would get less congested at night. It didn't.Man alive I'm hungry. I could sure go for a cereal bar. It turns out there aren't a lot of towns along the coast. Much of the land is protected for sea turtles. But I made it to the town of Isla Aguada. There must be a dozen "restaurants" on the main street. I only even approach those that are serving others, but I find these eateries to be incredibly confusing. I don't know what they sell. What I see doesn't look like food. There are no simple signs. Also, I'm still afraid of getting sick, and I still have a hard time with numbers. So I just continued peddling. When I arrived in Ciudad del Carmen, I decided to go to the Walmart and buy groceries, including peanut butter which is so expensive here. I was about to lock up my bike when a group approached, and their English-speaking representative offered to watch my bike for me. He claimed they worked for Walmart. I have no idea how sincere they were. I told him that he had just scared me away, and I put my helmet on and left. A few blocks later I found a local grocery store. When I was loading my bags with groceries, those missing cereal bars reappeared. I swear that entire pannier was just about empty. I have no idea how they could have hidden. I have plenty of cereal bars now. I stopped at McDonalds with a general curiosity and a hope that there would be WiFi (there isn't). I figured ordering would be easy with numbered combos. Except Mexico doesn't have numbered combos. Nothing is easy. The Big Mac tasted slightly off, but it was okay. After checking into a hotel and dealing with the adventure that is FedEx international shipping, I finally braved a local restaurant. This restaurant actually has tables and a waitress takes your order. I told her (via Google Translate) to just recommend something. It was good. |
