2015-10-24 tl;dr: I biked dirt roads through the mountains into Dixon where I wasn't feed well. I never saw an elk. Once again, I say that mice can make a stupid amount of noise in a steel pipe. But my tent stayed pretty warm (49 degrees) even though the temperatures dropped into the thirties outside. This dirt road actually has a rush hour. It lasts for about two hours after sunset, and again for two hours in the morning. It consists of trucks. All trucks. After rush hour another truck passed me and stopped. It was an elk hunter. He thought maybe I was hunting (because of all the orange I was wearing) and offered me a ride up the mountain. I declined. He informed me that yesterday he had two mountain lions approach within a dozen yards of him, and he asked if I had a pistol. I wasn't planning on camping in the mountains, so I wasn't worried. Even if there was a hungry mountain lion in the middle of the road, one look at my bicycle would cause it to scatter. Critters in this area almost never see bicycles. I continued up into the mountains. The roads I was on were often muddy. I spent a lot of time pushing my bike. This was usually when elk hunters drove by in their trucks. Why am I so weak? Oh, I'm at 8000 feet. I'm not used to that, yet. I never did see any elk. Or a mountain lion. Look, more antelope and mule deer! I stopped for dinner at a bar in Dixon. Their "special" was a little tiny plate of potatoes and ham for $10. Nobody around here wants to feed me. I set up my camp inside a shelter at the Dixon Sportsman Club. It looked mostly abandoned, but it was a good wind break. |
