2009-02-11 First thing today I dumped some of my dead weight at the post office. That seemed to make a big difference in the amount of effort I exerted. Or maybe my muscles are starting to get a clue. The road to the town of Ninety Six was pleasant enough if you managed to ignore the logging trucks. Just south of Ninety Six is the Ninety Six National Historic Site. (Look it up on wikipedia.). As far as historic sites go it seems a work-in-progress. But it was an educational experience nonetheless. It certainly reinforced my belief that our ancestors loved digging. They would often dig a bunch of trenches, and sometimes they would even fill them back in again. This day's travel was dominated by high winds and numerous hills (granny gear FTW). After Ninety Six I stuck to back roads (mostly not quite so back roads as in the picture). Back roads in South Carolina are a joy. Very little traffic. It's probably because there are so many of them. I ended the day back in Sumter National Forest; the southern segment, near Saluda. I stopped a little early as I was afraid that suitable camping sites would become more rare once I left the forest. Just as well, as the rain predicted for tonight has already started. It should be interesting sleeping in a swinging hammock. Stay away motion sickness! Stay away! |
