2009-02-22 I knew there was a Shoney's in Statesboro, so I resolved to bike some twenty-odd miles and eat breakfast there. That leg started off a little cold, but soon enough the cold wasn't all that noticeable because of the rain. The rain didn't last long, but was replaced by a nasty head wind.Once at Shoney's, I tried to put a hurt on them, but I suspect Shoney's snickered at my meager three plates of consumption and then proceeded to throw the hurt back at me. It turns out that even though I am fully capable of burning three plates of calories I am not so capable of digesting them. Fortunately, in spite of the waitress' warning, I didn't "catch a cramp." As stated before, the weather was rotten, and I would have been smart to get a hotel right there in Statesboro. Of course I didn't. I pushed on west against a thoroughly demoralizing head wind for twenty five miles or so before turning south and facing hills, hills and more hills. Finally I ended up in Vidalia, "The sweet onion city." I didn't see much today as the effort required to push against the wind and hills induced sort of tunnel-vision daze in me. I seem to be past the endless expanses of pine trees and am in farm country. Like the chicken feathers along many of South Carolina's roads, many of Georgia's roads are flanked by cotton balls. Again, I'll be here in Vidalia for a few days as I get some work done. This is my remuneration. |
