2009-03-27 It took me forever to get out of the Fort Myers area. A contributing factor as usual was work; I kept stopping behind small office complexes and poaching wifi. I biked north on highway 31. After the non-stop traffic of the last two weeks the occasional trucks on this road were a real treat. I hit the city of Arcadia in the late afternoon. I had wanted to stop at a store, but Arcadia presents itself as a seedy town where you simply don't want to lock your bike and walk away from it. If I thought I had seen orange groves before, I hadn't seen anything. I'm even camping in oranges. They do smell nice, though. My Southern Initiation is complete. Not only did I finally see a live armadillo, but I was attacked by fire ants. Ouch.
