2009-03-02 One advantage of biking in cold weather is that you can fill your water bottle up with orange juice and it doesn't go bad all day.My first stop was the Andersonville National Historic Site. This is the location of a POW museum, a National Cemetery and the infamous civil war prison. I doubt if my own commentary would surpass other literature, so google it. One of the many monuments is dedicated to Providence Spring. Its water tastes okay, but not great. There is a sign warning that "Water unfit for human consumption PLEASE DO NOT DRINK" which I didn't see until I was leaving. I still feel fine. Later while biking down highway 195 I spotted a herd of something crossing the road ahead of me. Eventually I got close enough to see a half-dozen giant calico cats trotting into the woods with another dozen or more pumpkins swarming about their feet. Before you blame the water I should clarify that I was seeing possibly the ugliest wild pigs ever. Of course the little ones were kind of cute. Unfortunately, I never got a good picture. For lunch I stopped at a little "restaurant" called Cutts Restaurant and Produce. I did not feel welcome. But the food was good, if a bit on the expensive side. Because it was along the way I visited George Veterans Memorial State Park where there was a small but impressive collection of military vehicles and aircraft on display. Definitely worth a look. Though it was cold today the wind for once was in my favor. I managed sixty-some miles before I had to stop in Ashburn and take care of customers. |
