2009-02-25 Today was almost a perfect day for biking. A favorable wind pushed me down quiet country roads. Blossoms, green grass and warm temperatures hinted at the very beginnings of Spring. Birds were out in force. It was a little cloudy, but that is preferable to getting sunburned again. And why do people keep calling me?! ARGH!This morning I debated with myself. Should I hope that no customers will call and hit the road? Or should I stay at the hotel and wait for the inevitable issues to arise. I chose to bike. The early morning was a bit brisk, but would have been barely noticeable if I hadn't broken the zipper on my cycling vest. It quickly warmed up, however, and I found a place to lean my bike as I stripped off a layer. I was leaning the bike because this morning I also broke the kick stand while cleaning the chain. The bike was leaning against a pillar beneath a bridge where boats are launched. Thinking back I can picture in my mind the exact spot where my pants are still crumpled up on the ground. Pants are overrated. By noon it was obvious that work was feeling needy and demanding my presence. Calls, voicemails and emails never used to be an issue on dirt roads. And there's nothing quite like continuously asking customers, "Can you repeat that? A truck just drove by." I changed course and found myself a hotel in McRae by one o'clock, where I proceeded to deal with issues. It looks like tomorrow (forecasted to be even nicer than today) will also be spent dealing. So far I don't think I've done more than three days of biking a week. How pitiful is that? Oh well. It's not like I have someplace to be. |
