Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park basically has just one road--a forty mile stretch from the park entrance to Flamingo. Flamingo is home to a park welcome center, marina store, some camp grounds, and no flamingos.

The ride in was nice. I took plenty of pictures, most of which will eventually be put on flickr. As usual, birds and other normally docile critters totally freaked when they saw my bicycle. In Flamingo I ate lunch while watching some crocodiles not move an inch. I inadvertently contributed to the litter I hate so much when a crow snagged my hamburger wrapper and flew off with it.

The ride out was brutal. This leg was against the wind. On the advice of a park ranger I brought my bike down a trail consisting of slimy clay and leaves. This gummed up my fenders to the degree that I had to remove one. Once again I ran out of water. Running out of water ruins your day. All you think about is getting a drink. I did drink some from the grasslands, but because it has been dry this water isn't flowing and is kind of nasty.

I am camping at the edge of the park behind some signs that read "no overnight camping". Those signs were guarding a small park, which I moved beyond and into the forest behind. So I should be good.
