2009-03-07 Even after the worst night of sleep ever it is slightly disconcerting to wake up and not worry about whether your water bottles are frozen or not.I don't know why, but I have found that many of these island communities have very narrow roads. Under these conditions I really need to push myself out into the lane; otherwise the fat cats in their four-wheel status symbols give me about four inches of clearance as they zoom by at eight miles per gallon. It seems non-intuitive, but the more road I claim with my bike, the more space people give me when they pass. Now this rule-of-thumb can backfire in small, isolated rural communities with women drivers (just saying--you tend to pay attention to these things), so be careful. A ferry brought me to Jacksonville Beach where I got a hotel and met with a customer later in the day. This is the first warm weekend this city has had so far this year, so things are a little crazy. I finally bought a new kick stand. Finding a decent map of Florida is proving to be more challenging. |
