2009-03-06 Would I like rotten-bacon-flavored water to go with my rotten-egg-flavored water? Yep, I'm in sulfur country.I set a new distance record today. I don't have the tools right now to figure the exact distance, but I know it's well over eighty miles. The first third of that was on highways through absolutely nowhere with almost no traffic. The second third contained moderate traffic but with decent road margins. The last third sucked. My route brought me from Georgia into Florida; back into Georgia; and finally to Florida again. I may have also set a new record for worst campsite ever. After arriving on Amelia Island (north of Jacksonville) just before dark I realized that because of all the development decent campsites were nonexistent. And the few hotels are either booked or too expensive. So I found a patch of woods slated for development a hundred yards from a busy highway. "Woods" may be an exaggeration. More like a shrub jungle. The sound of cars is pretty loud, but I can't hear them at all when planes take off or land a half-mile away. The squeak-frogs are kind of overpowering as well. Occasionally some nearby animals break out into squealing, hissing fights. At least once a very large opossum sauntered by the camp. And, as I'm trying to lay low (literally), I didn't set up my hammock, so the mosquitoes are having their way with me. Fortunately, either the recent weather or the island's yuppie aura seem to have kept this spot cleared of (other) homeless people. |
