What time is it?

2009-04-15

Not much to report. I spent the day on clear, winding roads through the springtime hills of southern Alabama.

I did some rough calculations. It turns out I am only about 360 miles from my starting point in South Carolina, but I peddled over 2000 miles to get here. If I were your typical cross-country cyclist, I'd be two-thirds of my way across America.

Speaking of here: It turns out I'm now in Central Time. Go figure.

My route today took me past Fort Rucker, home to more military helicopters than I've ever seen (which doesn't mean much, I guess). At one point there were a good half dozen in various positions in the sky around me. Watching one of these babies rise from the trees and rush off is kind of awesome. I wonder if the locals learn how to tune them out?

I am definitely in the land if the good ol' boys, but people keep waving at me, anyway. In Florida I was considered a nuisance. Here I'm a novelty. Or it may be because I'm on the back of the back roads and folks are just polite. Between Dothan and Luverne (some 75 miles) I only came across one small store and no gas stations.

Tomorrow I start on Highway 10, which I expect will be a little less rural.

green and hilly -- I like it
