2009-02-28 I decided to push ahead and do another thirty miles today despite the forecast. Actually, I would have preferred to go further, but I did not want to get caught out in the open tomorrow if the weather is indeed as bad as is being predicted. At one point today while I was still on the road waiting for the storm to arrive, I heard a strange humming sound. As it steadily grew louder my nervousness increased, because I had never heard such a sound before. Turned out to be monster truck tires on wet pavement. I didn't get too wet today. The precipitation was significant, but I waited out the bulk of it under a bridge. For an hour. Then I continued west. There are different sorts of local roads. Some are pavement. Some are dirt. Some are sand (shudder). And some are clay. Clay roads are actually pretty easy to bike on...until they get wet. Wet clay is soft and sticks to everything. I'm finding that the majority of back roads in Georgia are not paved. I may need to stick to main roads from here on. At some point today I also noticed that the grass was green. I wonder if when I make it farther south all of the trees will have leaves. |
